• I just discovered that autistic SF author Raphael Ordoñez wrote two articles about autism for The Mighty, and I was so excited that I decided to include them in this month’s News even though they are from 2016!

American politics:

• Brett Kavanagh, a candidate for the US Supreme Court, believes that it’s ok to perform elective surgeries on disabled people without their consent – and wants a greater number of disabled people to be considered incapable of declining or withdrawing consent.


• s.e. smith goes into more detail about Kavanagh’s ruling on this topic and its potential implications for disabled people and others.

Politics and policy from other places:

• In the UK, a judge ruled that it is discriminatory to exclude autistic students from school as a punishment for aggressive behavior.


• According to the Ontario Human Rights Commission, ableism is a widespread problem in Ontario’s schools and universities. (Sadly, I don’t think the current provincial government is likely to care.)
